Homeschooling in Illinois

Understanding Your Responsibilities

In Illinois, homeschooling is recognized as a form of private education. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) does not offer homeschool programs, curriculum, or funding. Families who choose to homeschool are fully responsible for researching, selecting, and implementing the educational materials and structure for their child’s learning.

Support from ISBE

ISBE provides helpful guidance on homeschooling, including information about registration, legal requirements, and available resources such as online schools, curriculum options, and FAQs.

Note: While some resources mention that Regional Offices of Education may require families to submit notification forms, ROE4 does not require this. Families must work directly with ISBE to ensure compliance with state guidelines and expectations.
