Read the Room: Differentiating Small Group Reading Instruction with Data That Works

oin us for a focused, hands-on professional development day dedicated to mastering the art of differentiated small group reading instruction. This training is designed to equip you with the strategies, structures, and confidence needed to utilize the teacher table as a powerhouse for accelerating growth for all your students, regardless of their starting point.

This intensive one-day session moves beyond theory, focusing on practical application and material design:

  • Strategic Grouping via Data: Determining each student’s precise reading needs using helpful assessments to inform strategic grouping and drive instructional focus.

  • Foundational Skills instruction: Designing targeted, focused small group instruction based on data that specifically attends to phonemic awareness, phonics, and encoding.

  • Bringing Small Group instruction to the Text: Learning how to dive into any text to extract every possible instructional detail, ensuring you effectively support both the lower and upper strands of reading (decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).

  • Meaningful Literacy Centers (Time Permitting): We will explore independent, valuable center activities and structures that ensure high-quality learning experiences for students while you are leading small groups.

  • Hands-On Design Time: We'll dedicate a significant portion of the day to application, allowing you to walk away with fully developed, customized materials ready for your classroom.

To ensure you get the most immediate and applicable value from this training, please bring a selection of texts that you plan to use with your students the following week.

We will be dedicating focused work time to design powerful teaching materials tailored to your actual class needs. Please bring 3-5 different reading texts (e.g., decodables, leveled books, articles, or short passages). You will leave the session with targeted lesson plans, differentiated prompts, and practical teaching moves designed specifically for the texts you brought, making your small group reading time powerful and immediately usable.
