This session will help ensure your fine arts programs and students thrive by implementing authentic and effective assessment strategies. The art and science of a balanced assessment plan will help enhance your daily practices and further support your students’ artistic expression and creative growth!


  • Review the big ideas and essential outcomes of the IL Arts Standards
  • Deepen your knowledge of assessment concepts
  • Examine and develop performance-based assessments
  • Utilize evidence of student learning to respond to student needs
  • Evaluate your current assessment practices and identify potential improvements

 About your presenter:

Jonathan Grice is the Director of Fine Arts at Adlai E. Stevenson High School since 2010. Prior to Stevenson, he served as the Fine Arts Department Chair and Visual Arts teacher at Riverside Brookfield High School.

In 2021, Jon was recognized as an Educator of Distinction from the Illinois Art Education Association for his work with Collaboration for Excellence Staff Development on Assessment. He has helped co-author two books, Proficiency-Based Grading in the Content Areas: Insights and Key Questions for Secondary Schools (2019) and The New Art and Science of Teaching Art and Music (2019).
